IPMAT is conducted by IIM Indore for admission to its 5-year Integrated Programme in Management. It is one of the most competitive undergraduate management entrance exams in India — and it is fundamentally different from CAT in ways that most students underestimate.
The difference that costs the most students: Short Answer questions.
IIM Indore IPMAT — Exam Pattern 2026
| Section | Questions | Time | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Ability | 60 | 90 min | 40 MCQ + 20 Short Answer |
| Verbal Ability | 40 | 90 min | 40 MCQ |
| Total | 100 | 180 min |
Marking:
- MCQ: +4 for correct, -1 for wrong
- Short Answer (SA): +4 for correct, 0 for wrong — no negative marking
The SA questions in QA are the defining feature of IPMAT. There are no options. You calculate and enter the answer directly. For most students, this section is where the exam is won or lost.
IIM Rohtak IPMAT — Exam Pattern 2026
IIM Rohtak conducts a separate IPMAT with a different pattern:
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 40 min |
| Logical Reasoning | 40 | 40 min |
| Verbal Ability | 40 | 40 min |
| Total | 120 | 120 min |
All MCQ. No SA questions. Slightly lower difficulty than IIM Indore.

- Calculation-based questions
IPMAT Syllabus — Verbal Ability
IPMAT VA tests grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension — but at a lighter difficulty level than CAT VARC.
- Reading Comprehension — 2-3 passages, 3-4 questions each
- Grammar — subject-verb agreement, tense, parts of speech, sentence correction
- Vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms, word usage in context, fill in the blanks
- Para Jumbles — sentence rearrangement
- Sentence Completion — choose the correct word to complete a sentence
- Error Spotting — identify the grammatically incorrect part of a sentence
VA in IPMAT rewards students with a broad vocabulary and clean grammar more than deep RC skills.
The Short Answer Problem
This is what makes IPMAT QA harder than it first appears.
In a standard MCQ exam, you can eliminate options, guess intelligently, and use answer choices to verify your work. In SA questions, there are no options. You must calculate the exact answer and enter it.
The consequences:
You cannot guess. The only benefit of attempting an SA question incorrectly is zero — there is no negative marking, but there is also no lucky-guess upside.
Calculation errors are more costly. Getting a wrong SA answer means getting zero, not -1. But the time you spent on it is still lost. Students who attempt SA questions they cannot solve cleanly lose time without gaining marks.
Speed is critical. 60 QA questions in 90 minutes is 90 seconds per question on average. SA questions typically take longer than MCQs. Students who spend 3-4 minutes on difficult SA questions and run out of time for easier MCQs are losing marks at the margin.
The strategy: attempt SA questions only when you are confident in your calculation path. If you cannot see a clear route to the answer in 30 seconds, move to the next question.
Section-wise Time Strategy
Quantitative Ability (90 minutes, 60 questions):
- Spend the first 40 minutes on MCQ questions — aim to attempt 35-38 of them
- Use the remaining 50 minutes on SA questions — aim to attempt 12-15 with high accuracy
- Leave truly difficult questions (both MCQ and SA) to the end
Verbal Ability (90 minutes, 40 questions):
- RC passages first — 3-4 minutes per passage including questions
- Grammar and vocabulary questions — 45-60 seconds each
- Para jumbles — 90-120 seconds each
- Use remaining time to revisit marked questions
Colleges That Accept IPMAT Scores
IIM Indore — the flagship. One of the most sought-after undergraduate management programmes in India. Cut off typically 99+ percentile for General category.
IIM Rohtak — separate IPMAT exam. Slightly more accessible.
IIM Ranchi, IIM Jammu, IIM Bodh Gaya — conduct their own IPM entrance exams or accept JIPMAT scores.
Other programmes:
- JIPMAT (Joint IPMAT) accepted by IIM Ranchi and IIM Jammu
- NPAT for NMIMS
- SET for Symbiosis
Preparation Strategy — How to Structure Your Time
Phase 1 (First 2 months): Build QA fundamentals. Arithmetic first, then algebra and number theory. Parallel track: VA grammar and vocabulary. No mocks yet.
Phase 2 (Next 6 weeks): Topic-wise practice with a focus on SA-type questions. Practice calculating without options. Build speed with formula-based shortcuts.
Phase 3 (Final 6 weeks): Full-length mocks every week. Post-mock analysis focused on SA accuracy and time distribution. Identify your strongest and weakest QA topics.
The One Advantage IPMAT Preparation Gives You
Students who prepare seriously for IPMAT and do not convert IIM Indore are well-positioned for:
- CAT (the QA preparation directly transfers)
- CUET (for DU and other central universities)
- Other BBA entrance exams (IPU CET, Christ University, Symbiosis)
IPMAT preparation is not a gamble on one exam. It is building a foundation that pays across multiple tests and — if you do the work properly — into CAT preparation two years later.
The students who crack IIM Indore are not exceptional. They are systematic. The exam rewards calculation accuracy and speed — both of which are trainable skills, not innate ability.
