IPMAT (Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test) is the entrance exam for the 5-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) at IIM Indore — India's most prestigious undergraduate management programme. It is the only direct route to an IIM degree without appearing in CAT. Separate IPMAT variants are conducted by IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, and other IIMs for their own IPM programmes.
The most challenging and consequential section of IPMAT. The 20 Short Answer (SA) questions have no options — you must compute exact answers. No negative marking on SA, but wrong MCQs cost −1. Covers Number Systems, Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic, P&C, Probability, and Data Interpretation. Strong QA here is what separates IIM Indore admits from the rest of the pack.
Reading Comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, para-jumbles, fill in the blanks, and sentence correction. More straightforward than CAT VARC but requires solid reading speed and vocabulary depth. RC passages are moderate in length. This section is where consistent daily practice creates the largest score differential.
IIM Rohtak's IPMAT has three sections: QA (40 Qs, 40 mins), LR (40 Qs, 40 mins), and VA (40 Qs, 40 mins). The LR section tests syllogisms, arrangements, blood relations, series, and coding-decoding — standard patterns that are highly learnable with structured practice. IIM Indore IPM is a fully residential 5-year programme that grants both a BBA and an MBA equivalent degree. Placements are at par with IIM Indore's regular PGP. Selecting this path at 18 eliminates the need to compete in CAT later — a significant strategic advantage for high-achieving students.
IPMAT Eligibility Criteria
IPMAT is designed for students completing or having completed Class 12 — it is an undergraduate entrance exam, not a postgraduate one. Eligibility varies slightly between IIM Indore, Rohtak, and other institutions.
Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 (10+2) from any recognised board are eligible. Students in their final year of Class 12 can apply provisionally and must submit results before PI-WAT.
60% aggregate in Class 12 for General/OBC/EWS candidates. 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Class 10 marks also factor into the final merit list after the aptitude test stage.
Candidates must be below 20 years of age as of July 31 of the admission year for General, OBC, and EWS categories. SC/ST/PwD candidates get a relaxation of 5 years (below 25 years).
There is no official limit on the number of times a candidate can appear for IPMAT, as long as they meet the age and educational eligibility criteria. In practice, most candidates appear once or twice due to the age limit.
Any recognised national or state board is accepted — CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, state boards, and open school boards. International qualifications equivalent to Class 12 are also considered on a case-by-case basis by IIM Indore.
IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Jammu, and IIM Bodh Gaya have their own separate IPMAT exams with similar but not identical eligibility. Most require 60% in Class 12 and fall within the same age bracket. GRADSKOOL prepares students for all these variants.
