XAT isn't just XLRI's own entrance test, it's used by a genuinely large network of business schools across India, and internationally, to shortlist candidates. But most guides just dump a long list of college names without explaining that XAT institutes actually fall into two structurally different categories. That distinction matters more than the list itself.
The Two-Tier Structure
XAMI Members, the Core Jesuit Network
XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes) is the founding network XAT was originally built for, a group of just 12 institutes, all part of the broader Jesuit educational tradition, sharing a common philosophy around management education.
The XAMI network includes:
- XLRI Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, the exam's own conducting institute
- XIM University (Xavier Institute of Management), Bhubaneswar
- LIBA (Loyola Institute of Business Administration), Chennai
- XIME (Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship), Bengaluru
- St. Joseph's Institute of Management, Bengaluru
- Xavier Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai
- Xavier Business School, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata
- XISS (Xavier Institute of Social Service), Ranchi
- XIDAS (Xavier Institute of Development Action and Sciences), Jabalpur
- St. Francis Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai
- AIMIT (St. Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology), Mangalore

These 12 institutes represent XAT's original core, and typically place the greatest weight on XAT-specific performance, particularly Decision Making, in their selection process.
Associate Institutes, the Wider Network
Beyond XAMI, over 250 additional B-schools accept XAT scores for shortlisting, a genuinely wide range spanning well-known names like Great Lakes Institute of Management (Chennai), T A Pai Management Institute (Manipal), Goa Institute of Management, BIMTECH (Greater Noida and Bhubaneswar), Woxsen University (Hyderabad), Mahindra University (Hyderabad), FORE School of Management (New Delhi), International Management Institute (New Delhi and Bhubaneswar), K J Somaiya Institute of Management (Mumbai), and MICA (Ahmedabad), alongside many regional and specialised institutes across the country.
These Associate Institutes use XAT purely as one shortlisting input among several, weighting it differently from how XAMI members do, and each runs its own separate admission process after shortlisting.
Why This Distinction Matters for Your Prep and Applications
XAMI members generally weight Decision Making and overall XAT performance more heavily, since the exam was built specifically for this network's selection philosophy. If your target list leans XAMI, DM preparation isn't optional depth, it's central to your actual shortlisting odds.
Associate Institutes vary far more in how they use your score. Some weight XAT heavily, others use it as a baseline cutoff before moving to their own case studies, group discussions, or personal interviews. It's worth researching each specific institute's actual selection process rather than assuming XAT score alone determines your outcome.
Don't apply everywhere on the list indiscriminately. With XAT's programme-preference fees adding ₹200 per additional choice, and over 250 Associate Institutes to choose from, a deliberate, researched shortlist based on your actual goals, specialisation, location, and fit, serves you better than maximising the number of applications.
